Stria Collection
Jamie Stern Furniture, Carpet & Leather, in partnership with NYC-based interior design and branding studio Dutch East Design, launched the STRIA Rug Collection: a collection of natural fiber rugs in both hand-tufted and hand-loomed constructions in five different patterns, all handmade by artisan weavers in India. While hand-tufted rugs have been a longstanding mainstay of Jamie Stern Carpet, STRIA seeks to break ground by introducing new techniques like the Punja Dhurrie weft-faced plain weave, experiment with decorative elements such as overstitching and push boundaries with regard to color gradation. Larah Moravek of Dutch East Design conceptualized the STRIA Collection based on the tenet of honoring the imperfect, celebrating the handmade quality and construction of the woven line.
The STRIA Collection incorporates the time-honored techniques of traditional rug-making with the singular artistry of a contemporary design studio. Dutch East Design’s curated palette and patterns, with both hand-tufted and hand-loomed rug constructions, create a sense of movement within each design. The collection comes in five patterns - Abound, Block Form, Convergence, Frame of Mind, & Stop Motion. Each of the pattern names are inspired by Larah’s personal experiences within her beloved New York City.
The STRIA Collection celebrates the intensity of the woven textile where grid and repetition are the heroes. These inherent properties guide the design for a dynamic visualization, creating a common ground between art and design.
Color blocking defines the composition and ombre offers a gestural effect in each of the patterns in the STRIA Collection. The palette originates from the essence of natural pigmentation, using a vivid and paired back combination of indigo, sienna and bone. Dutch East Design was passionate about the STRIA collection embodying a poetic interplay between pattern, color and technique.
